Friday night, the 20th of March, could be a historic one for Kieran Molloy. 

The Killannin native and former Oughterard amateur will bid for the vacant IBF European Welterweight Title when he takes on Xavier Kohlen at the SSE Arena in Belfast. 

Molloy is unbeaten as a professional and has been impressive in his career so far, but Friday week will be his toughest test to date. 

The excitement has been building in Galway ahead of the fight, and while on a short trip home, Kieran dropped into the studio to speak to John Mulligan and George McDonagh. 

This Saturday, crews from all over the country and from the United States and Europe will be converging on Galway for the 2026 Head Of The River. 

Over 1,200 competitors will take to the Corrib in one of the highlights of the rowing calendar. 

The Tribesmen Head Of The River is a demanding 4km time trial that starts at the lake and finishes just before the Quincentennial Bridge, with this year also a significant year for the club, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in style this St Patrick’s weekend.

A new perpetual trophy will be awarded this year to the fastest Women’s Masters crew. 

The prize is sponsored by the Tribesmen Masters women’s panel — four of whom won gold medals at last year’s World Championships in Banyoles, an extraordinary achievement given they only took up rowing within the past five years.

Ahead of the event, Regatta Chairman Patrick Boyle joined John Mulligan in the studio.
