HURLING: Sylane chairperson Noel Tyrell pays tribute to the club’s founding member Brendan Maloney

The sudden death occurred on Thursday (11th January 2024) of Brendan Maloney, one of the founding members of Sylane hurling club, and a well-known publican in Tuam in the 1990s.

Brendan was a selector with Matt Murphy in the All-Ireland minor winning team of 1992 and spent the last number of years based in Straide and Foxford in Mayo.

Sporting circles in Galway and Mayo are shocked at the sudden death in his home in Straide last evening of Brendan Maloney who was a founding member of Sylane Hurling Club and aged 62.

He was a selector on the Galway All-Ireland winning minor hurling team of the early 90s.

He was a native of Cloonaglasha and purchased the former Shamrock Bar, High Street, Tuam and built Maloney’s Bar Restaurant and Night Club on the site.

He later sold on the premises and moved to North Mayo to purchase the Copper Beach Bar and Lounge in Straide Foxford which he turned into a thriving business over the past 18 years.

A kind and sincere man who was loved by all who knew him Brendan’s sudden death is a shock to everyone but especially his sister Veronica, brother Oliver, niece Aoife, nephews Niall, Enda and Eric and his sister-in-law Maura and a wide circle of cousins, neighbours and friend in business and in sports circles in both Galway and Mayo.

New York celebrate Connacht Senior Hurling League win

Saturday evening was a historic one for the New York hurlers as they beat Mayo to win the Connacht Senior Hurling League in the Connacht GAA Dome. 

Following on from their win over Galway Development on Thursday, Richie Hartnett's side beat Mayo by 2-25 to 2-12. 

There were six Galway men on the panel in Darragh Hynes, Darren O’Donoghue, Conor Caulfield, David Mangan, Martin Cullen and Gary Corless.

Eugene Kyne and Mike Hynes were selectors. 

Richie Hartnett spoke to John Mulligan on Sunday Sport.

Galway to host Annual Sportsturf Ireland Conference and Trade Show from Tuesday

Galway will host the annual Sportsturf Ireland Conference & Trade Show, from Tuesday to Thursday of this week.

The Galmont Hotel in the heart of  Galway will be the venue this year seeing the introduction of the Sustainability Forum on Tuesday and back by popular demand their Trade Show Reception featuring complimentary finger food and refreshments.

Damien McLaverty is the General Manager of the ATPI and He and Noel Connolly joined John Mulligan in studio on Sunday to talk about the conference. 

 

Walsh Cup Opener ends in game being abandoned - Commentary and Reaction

Galway's Walsh Cup opening game with Offaly began, continued and ended in confusion on Sunday afternoon due to the heavy fog that had fallen on O'Connor Park in Tullamore. 

Conditions were difficult for both teams with visibility almost nil for the players, supporters and media at the ground. 

Ultimately, the game was called off with fifteen minutes remaining with Galway winning by 4-15 to 1-11. 

Here is how the game went with Sean Walsh, Niall Canavan and Cyril Farrell.
